If a Shopify favicon appears in the browser but not in Google Search, start by separating Shopify configuration from Google's processing. Neither Shopify nor Google says that a missing result icon is normally caused by Shopify's CDN, and Google does not require an exact 48×48 PNG.

The reliable workflow uses two first-party sources: Shopify's favicon setup and troubleshooting guide and Google's search favicon documentation.

1. Confirm the favicon on the published storefront

In Shopify admin, open Online Store → Themes → Edit theme → Theme settings, then choose Logo or Favicon and save the image. Shopify notes that the favicon does not display inside the Theme Editor because that editor is part of the admin, not the live storefront.

Open the published store in a normal browser tab. Do not treat the Theme Editor preview as the final test. Shopify also notes that adding a storefront favicon requires the Basic plan or higher.

2. Inspect the live home page and file

Shopify recommends a 16×16 or 32×32 source for its theme setting and may resize a larger upload. Google has a different search guideline: at least 8×8, with an image larger than 48×48 recommended. Those statements describe different uses; neither says that Shopify merchants must hardcode a dedicated 48×48 file into theme.liquid.

3. Check Google eligibility

Googlebot must be able to crawl the home page and Googlebot-Image must be able to crawl the icon. Make sure the store is publicly accessible and the relevant URLs are not blocked by robots.txt or authentication.

Shopify's own troubleshooting advice says to submit the store sitemap to Google so the store can be crawled. In Google Search Console, inspect the live home page and request indexing after the saved favicon is visible on the storefront.

4. Allow time and avoid unsupported fixes

Google says processing can take several days to several weeks and does not guarantee display. Do not edit theme code, purge CDN caches, weaken bot protection, or rotate asset URLs unless your own response checks show a real problem.
